Course Details
Embedded Systems
Beginner Level
- In this course, students will design and build microcontroller-based embedded system applications using the new RP2040 microcontroller chip and the RPi Pico microcontroller board - that is manufactured here at Avon Center by Gearbox-Europlacer, as well as the ESP32 RISC-V microcontroller chip from Espressif Systems.
- Students will use the RPi Pico and the ESP32 microcontrollers in a series of hands-on labs and projects, supervised by lab mentors. These applications will be applied to modern Access Control Systems and Security Systems. The students will be taken through several labs on (basic) electronic circuits, microcontroller programming, and applications including CCTV asset monitoring, GPS asset tracking, Accelerometers and Access Control using IoT (Internet of Things) motion detection sensors, RFID, Biometrics and Ultrasound sensors.
- Human Centered Design
- Life skills
- Design and implement Asset Control and Asset Monitoring systems using the RPi Pico and ESP32 microcontrollers.
- Design and implement an RFID Card access control system that controls entry and exit access through a gate/door using a microcontroller (the RPi or ESP32), an RFID Card, and an RFID Card Reader.
- Use an Ultrasonic sensor to control entry and exit access through a gate/door.
- Practical experience of how to use C/C++ and Python programming to drive actuators using microcontrollers and an actuator (such as a servo motor or solenoid).
- Use Infrared motion sensors to detect approaching objects and activate actuators.
- Measuring Acceleration with the MPU6050 accelerometer/gyroscope via the Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) interface.
- Use Electronic tools and equipment: Multimeters, soldering station, wire strippers, oscilloscope, hot glue gun, precision screwdriver sets, wires cutters, etc.
- Implement Electronic Circuits on a breadboard that are controlled by the RPi Pico or ESP32 microcontrollers.
- Learn how to implement Asset Tracking/Motion Detection using a professional-grade CCTV camera and infrared motion detector.
