Why Join Gearbox?

Gearbox is a members-only facility, but not because we don't wish everyone could join! As a nonprofit, our mission is to keep our prices as low as possible -- so low, in fact, we're remaking the world of product development in East Africa.

That said, we can't keep the lights on if we don't charge something. In addition to the membership dues, certain machines have a low, hourly-use fee, we charge a small amount for our classes to cover the cost of materials and be able to pay our instructors, and we offer storage lockers for rent.

As a member, not only do you get exclusive access to the facilities, you also get significant discounts on classes, access to our retail/procurement services, the option to rent storage lockers on site, and to be a part of the fastest growing community of hardware entrepreneurs in Africa.

Materials and Consumables

Consumables -- things like machine oil, grinding belts, or etching solution that are required to operate the equipment but generally do NOT become a part of the final product being made -- are provided by Gearbox free of charge.

Materials -- things like metal stock, wood, plastic, FR-4 boards, electronic components like resistors and capacitors, or other items that DO become a part of the final product being made -- must be provided by the member.

Gearbox maintains a small selection of commonly used materials available for sale in our retail section, and may be able to procure some items as needed. Certain materials, like 3D printer filament, are specific to our machines and must be purchased from Gearbox on site. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about what is available.

ALL chemicals being brought into Gearbox must be checked in and approved at the front desk.

  • Members can access the space only during normal operating hours, currently Monday - Friday, 10am to 6pm.
  • Non-members will not be allowed beyond the reception counter except during scheduled classes, events, or tours. Tours must be scheduled in advance. This is necessary to maintain a safe working environment!
  • The minimum age for members is 16. Members under 18 must have a legal guardian's signature on the membership agreement.
  • Members may bring visitors into the space only if they have made arrangements in advance with the front desk. Members take full responsibility for the safety and conduct of their guests.
